Note the headline report: "Valley Blacked Out"
(Just two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor Maj. Grover C. Goodrich, commander of Fort Brown, got the entire Texas valley to test a blackout and air raid warnings. Did he expect a Japanese or German attack from Mexico? It is interesting to think how fast the blackout test could be put into effect in 1941, but in the 21st Century we can't stop millions of people from invading the country from across the same border.)

(Lt. General John L. DeWitt tells San Francisco that "death and destruction are likely to come to this city at any moment." He was not pleased at the way people responded to the warnings, and he suggested that it might have been a good thing if Japanese planes had dropped a few bombs on San Francisco to jolt the city into a realization of the fact. In the Perth, Australia paper of Dec. 11th he is quoted as saying that San Francisco "was under imminent threat of attack.")
