Note the report in column 6: "Heavier Penalties For Food Hoarders"
In other news, HM Trawler Lady Shirley was sunk by U-374, all thirty-three men were lost with the ship. This ship had been in the news for sinking U-111 on Oct. 4th.

Note the report at top right: "Jap Battleship Ablaze After Three Bomb Hits"
(The report states that the Japanese battleship Haruna was hit and was burning "fiercely." Other reports claim the ship was sunk. Neither of these reports were true. Strangely enough, the first Japanese battleship reported sunk was among the last Japanese ships sunk in the war. Haruna survived until July of 1945, when after a series of U.S. carrier aircraft attacks, she settled on the bottom in shallow water. The ship was later raised and scrapped.)

Note the report in column 1: "Stimson Confirms Sinking Of Jap Battleship"
(Secretary of War Henry Stimson, tells the press that Haruna was sunk by U.S. bombers off the northern coast of Luzon, Philippines. This was not true, in fact Haruna was in the Gulf of Siam at this time.)

(President Roosevelt's announcement that the U.S. had declared war against Germany and Italy.)

Note the headline and report in columns 7-8: "U.S. Sinks Two Jap Warships Off Wake; Attacks Repulsed There And In Luzon"
(The headline was close to correct. The two ships mentioned were involved in the attack on Wake Island, both were destroyers. Hayate was damaged by USMC shore guns and beached, the ship was a total loss. The other destroyer, Kisaragi was sunk by USMC aircraft. The attack on Wake Island was repulsed, but the Philippines were lost.)
