Daily Event for September 2, 2009

Sept. 2, 1909: One hundred years ago today the British submarine C-31 was launched at Vickers, Sons & Maxim in Barrow-in-Furness. In Jan. 1915 the boat sailed from Dover to patrol off Zeebrugge, Belgium, but never returned. Some sources say she was sunk by a mine, however it is possible she grounded and was destroyed by shore guns. A wreck located 8 miles NW of Knokke-Heist, Belgium is thought to be the C-31, but has not been positively identified to my knowledge.
