On Sept. 2, 1917 both the hunter and the hunted became victims. SMS U-28 fired on the SS Olive Branch in the Barents Sea, 100 miles north of the North Cape. She had sailed from Liverpool bound for Port Ramanov, Russia filled with munitions. The U-boat commander could not have known what her cargo was, but when the ship exploded his submarine was so badly damaged that it also sank. Only one man from the Olive Branch was killed, the survivors being picked up by other ships in the convoy. However for the Germans no rescue was attempted, all thirty-nine were left in the sea to die. |
