I'm a big WWII buff, with a special fondness for the naval war in the Pacific. I have a dear friend, Mary Jackson, whose father, Elmer, was from Arkansas and served on the USS Hornet (CV-8) during its brief but tumultuous war service. I don't know Mr. Jackson's specific rank/rating, but believe he was in the enlisted ranks and worked with aviation ordnance. He remained in the Navy, retiring around 1970. Alas, he passed in 2004. Mr. Jackson resided in Chesapeake, VA for the last ~ 40 years of his life. Prior to that, he had sure - based assignments at naval installations in California and in Chattanooga TN.

I know there aren't many CV-8 crewmen still with us in 2023, but I'm sending this on the odd chance that one of them, or a family member, might recognize or remember Elmer Jackson. I wish I had come across this website 20 years ago. As far as I'm concerned, all those who served were heroes.
