October 1898: Cretan Muslims arrested and tried for the murder of some fourteen British soldiers and four British subjects during rioting which took place in Candia (Iraklion), Crete on 6th September 1898. Twelve Cretan Muslims were hanged by the British for the murder of the British soldiers and five hanged for the murder of the British citizens. A further two were executed by an International firing squad for unspecified murders during the rioting. (Caption by Mick McTiernan)
