October 2, 1939: Front page of the Marshall Evening Chronicle, Marshall, Michigan. One of the first mentions in the press of a German raider loose on the high sea. The story, All ships in So Atlantic are Warned was written after the loss of the Clement Sept. 30, 1939 and presumes that the raider was the Admiral Scheer.

October 4, 1939: Front page of the Charleston Daily Mail, Charleston, West Virginia, the story New Warnings Sent to Ships again identifies the raider as Admiral Scheer.

October 10, 1939: The front page of the Gettysburg Times, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania announces the rescue of the survivors from the Clement, the first victim of the Admiral Graf Spee, but again the raider is identified as Admiral Scheer, this deception by Kapitän zur See Hans W. Langsdorff and his crew kept the true identity of the ship a secret until she finally limped into Montevideo, Uruguay after the Battle of the River Plate.

October 11, 1939: The front page of the Lowell Sun, Lowell, Massachusetts, the story Wide Hunt for Scheer again shows that the deception was working.
