3. Aug. 3, 2018 Family legend has it that my great uncle, Arthur Hetherington, was an engineering officer on board the Africa Shell when she was hit and sunk. He survived, and apparently wound up after the war running a pub on Holy Island. I would be immensely grateful for a steer as to finding out more about him, and how the crew were recovered from their life boats. Very many thanks, Sarah Carr |
2. Feb. 25, 2012 I was reading your web site and thought that maybe you could be of help. I live in Uruguay and my mother was niece of Captain Patrick Dove. I would like to know if there is any possibility to contact any relative of Captain Patrick Dove. This could be interesting to help know a little bit more about my family and to know the origin of it, because as it used to happen, my grandfather escaped from the Second World War and never said anything to us about his family. Thanking you in advance. I remain, sincerely yours, Nelsa I. Sans |
1. May 22, 2010 I am a pensioner visitor in England and recently had a conversation with someone who served under Captain Patrick Dove on the vessel Africa Shell. He was wondering what happened to him after the Graf Spee was sunk. I apologize for asking this out of the blue, but I've been looking on the 'net' for a couple of days and can find nothing but accounts of Battle of the River Plate. I have also found accounts of his book and film, but no reference to his later life or death. My pensioner friend just wanted to know what happened to Captain Dove after the Graf Spee was sunk. Did he live back in UK? Is he still alive/when did he die? I have looked through your excellent website and wondered if you know any detail to my question. Best Regards, Mike Downham |
Reply 1 May 23, 2010 Patrick G.G. Dove died May 25, 1957 aboard his ship Alva Cape while in Indonesia. He stayed with the Shell company until about 1954 when he took over the Alva Steamship Company. Michael W. Pocock Webmaster |
