[*Historical note: On this day in 1941 Generalfeldmarschall Wilhelm Keitel, Chief of Staff of the Wehrmacht, issued a memo with the following included;

"Part 1, section B
The defenses of the German-occupied British' Channel islands are to be reinforced in the course of the next two months by means of coastal batteries and similar. Units of the Army to such an extent that any landing attempts can be warded off without the aid of bomber units of the Air Force. These measures are to be utilized as deception in connection with operation Sealion."


(Sealion was the code word for the invasion of Great Britain.)

(The Admiralty issued an order to all British ships of under 1,600 tons must be equipped with wireless receiving equipment (radio.) They also order said ships to maintain a wireless watch at sea at 7 a.m., 1 p.m., 9 p.m. and midnight.)

(An astonishing number, which would be corrected to 700 the following day.)

Note the report in column 3: "Nazi Surface Raiders Attack Convoy - Claim 13 Ships Sunk"
(This must have been the attack on HG-53 and SLS-64 on Feb. 9 and 12, 1941. HG-53 was attacked by a combined effort of U-37 and Fw-200's of 2./KG40. The final toll was 8 out of 22 sunk. Seven British and one Norwegian ship. Admiral Hipper attacked SLS-64 sank another 7 ships on the 12th, (Admiral Hipper accounted for 1 ship from HG-53.) German aircraft sank one on the 12th which was not in HG-53, and U-52 sank one on the 10th from OG-52.)

(Apparently Wild Bill Donovan lost his passport, money and other material soon after visiting King Boris at the palace in Sofia, Bulgaria. It was returned to Ambassador Earle's office by the Bulgarian political police.)
