Note the report in column 7: "Dead Girl's Brain Points Way to Cure"
(The girl, Patricia McGuire, was the victim of lethargic encephalitis, also known as sleeping sickness. The 1990 movie Awakenings, starring Robin Williams, was based on people who had this type of illness. In reality Dr. Oliver Sack studied people in the 1960's who had been "sleeping" since an encephalitis epidemic between 1917 and 1928. Mary remained in this condition until her death at age 25 on July 17, 1961. It was reports about another girl, Mary Ellen Reardon, last March, which sparked my interest in this subject.)

Sept. 29, 1940: Front page of The Port Arthur News, Port Arthur, Texas.

Note the report in columns 2-4: If Democracy Fails, U.S. People To Blame---Dies"
(He did not know how right he was. I wonder what he would think of the current situation in the U.S.A.? As I have said before, only Americans can hurt America. There is another quote, which everyone should remember. "You can vote your way into socialism, but you will have to shoot your way out.")

Sept. 29, 1940: Front page of The Cedar Rapids Gazette, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Sept. 29, 1940: Front page of the Nevada State Journal, Reno, Nevada.

Note the report in column 4: "Young Scientists Find Giant Tusk In Inland Region"
(This appears to be a case of the headline writer not fully reading the report. The headline says a "tuck" was found, but the report states a shark's tooth was found. The confusion may be the use of the word mammoth to describe the tooth.)

Sept. 29, 1940: Front page of the Völkischer Beobachter, the official newspaper of the NSDAP.
(Click on the image for a readable version.)
1. Ungeheures Echo auf den Dreierpakt.
A tremendous response to the tripartite pact.)
2. Die Westfront gegen die Kriegstreiber steht.
(The western front against the warmongers stands.)
