Daily Event for September 18, 2010

The City of Lincoln was a cargo ship built in 1911 and scrapped in 1934, but during the Great War on September 18, 1917 while en route to New York from The Netherlands she was torpedoed by SMS U-106. The explosion killed nine crewmen, but the the attack was not over. HMS Contest came alongside to assist and remove survivors, when a second torpedo exploded in her side. The destroyer sank taking thirty-five crewmen with her and the ship they came to help became their lifeboat. The German commander, Kapitänleutnant Hans Hufnagel, did not make any attempt to attack the steamer again and, even though damaged, she made port.

According to records these were the only two ships ever damaged by Hufnagel and U-106, it is unknown if he attacked any other ships and it is also unknown why he did not finish off the City of Lincoln when he had the chance. He should have had more than enough torpedoes having only expended two of the estimated sixteen he should have had on board. The answers to these questions will never be known as U-106 and every man in the boat perished before returning to their base. The wreck of U-106 was found off the Dutch coast in 2009 and identified in 2011, it appears that a mine sank the boat.
