Daily Event for November 5

Built in 1921 at Vickers Ltd. the 6,993 ton tanker Scottish Maiden was torpedoed and sunk on November 5, 1940 by U-99, she was the fourth and last ship sunk by Kapitänleutnant Otto Kretschmer during this patrol. This was a lucky shot for Kretschmer since it was his last torpedo and it was fired at almost 4,000 yards. I have no further details about the sinking other than the 28 survivors were picked up by HMS Beagle H-30 and taken to Liverpool, the captain, John W. A. Gibson was among the survivors. Sixteen of her crew perished with the ship.
