Daily Event for November 5

Nov. 5, 1821 the sidewheeler Savannah was wrecked on Fire Island, New York. This ship had been the first
U.S. built ship to cross the Atlantic under steam power back in 1819 visiting Ireland, England, Denmark,
Sweden, Norway and Russia. The King of Sweden had even tried to purchase the ship.

In 1820 she was sold, her engines were removed and she was used as a sailing packet until the time of her
loss. Some sources say that all eleven on board were killed while others say nobody was, but the ship was
a total loss.
