On October 16, 1926 on the Yangtze river near Kiukiang (Jiujiang),
Kiangsi
(Jiangxi) Provence, China, a troopship named Kuang Yung, loaded with 1,500 Chinese troops and full of munitions, caught fire and exploded. Over 1,200 of the troops perished and a number of the people on shore were also killed as the discharging munitions rained down on the city. While the number of deaths came near to the number of those lost in the Titanic, the coverage of the event did not. The details are not known and the event itself is almost completely unknown. |
