October 16, 1905 the HMS A-4 was swamped by a passing boat and sank off Portsmouth, England. Water came in through an open vent while they were conducting sound tests. Only quick action by one of the ship's officers saved the eleven man crew. 1st Lt. G. Herbert managed to locate the blow valve and bring the boat to the surface. All eleven crewmen escaped and the boat was raised and repaired. |
