Daily Event for October 3, 2010

On October 3, 1925 the Lexington CV-2 was launched at Fore River Shipbuilding in Quincy, Massachusetts. Lexington was the first carrier launched for the U.S. Navy, she had been converted from a battle cruiser after being laid down due to the limitations of the Washington Treaty. Lexington was lost in the Battle of the Coral Sea on May 8, 1942.

October 3, 1925: Front page of the Syracuse Herald, Syracuse, New York. The launch of the "Plane Carrier" Lexington was given only a small story at the bottom of the page as the headlines were focused on the attempt to rescue the survivors of the sunken submarine USS S-51 which had been run down on Sept. 25.
