Daily Event for January 21, 2010

A boiler explosion on USS San Diego ARC-6 off the coast of Mexico occurred on Jan. 21, 1915, this happened following a four hour full speed trial run from LaPaz, California. While men were dying and steam was pouring around them, two men stood out as heroes saving several others at the risk of their own lives. Ens. (Later Rear Admiral) Robert W. Cary Jr. and Fireman 2nd Class Telesforo Trinidad, for this they both received the Medal of Honor. Several others were publicly commended by the Secretary of the Navy, they were; Watertenders Frank Bush, Glenmont King, James Rush and Firemen Willie F. Andigin, Andrew Dethlefesen and Ray Lofgren. The tragedy took the lives of nine sailors, five died within a few hours, four others died of their injuries within days.
