September 13, 1919: The first of three never before publish photos shows Captain Ivan O. Mettengel, commanding officer of USS Oregon welcoming President Woodrow Wilson to the ship for the Pacific Fleet Review in Elliott Bay, Seattle, Washington. Oregon was used as flagship of the fleet review and this was the first time a president had flown his flag in Seattle. Before arriving on the Oregon the launch that the president was in nearly capsized and then collided with a U.S. Navy whaleboat when casting off from the pier, none of the president's party were injured. |
