Leonard J. Thom was born September 8, 1917 in Sandusky, Ohio. He was the executive officer of the PT-109 under Lt. Bryant L. Larson and served as commanding officer for the period of time between Lt. Larson's departure and Lt. jg. Kennedy's arrival. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal after his rescue. He was then assigned as commanding officer of PT-587. He returned to the USA and was stationed at the PT training base at Melville, Rhode Island. Tragically, he was killed in a car train accident in Ravenna, Ohio
