I joined Andomeda at Portsmouth in 1968, until August 71, is there anyone out there who served on her 1st commission?

It is with deep sadness that I have to inform you that our father, Captain David Smith, O.B.E., F.N.I., R.N., Elder Brother of Trinity House, died in Malta following a short illness aged 86. I know that our father had a particular fondness for the Andromeda Association and enjoyed many a dinner with old shipmates.

Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday 23 April 2013 at 12noon at Portsmouth Cathedral, Old Portsmouth. Uniform or Lounge Suits. Family flowers only. Donation if desired to the HMS Trincomalee Trust c/o Barrells Funeral Directors, 245 Fratton Road, Portsmouth PO7 7TA.

The comments from John Miller on HMS ANDROMEDA were most interesting, and correct. I to was on the ANDROMEDA for her first commission and remember the photos you display. Elizabeth Lawrence who supplied the photos must be the wife of the late George Lawrence who was the M.A.A. on board for the 1st Commission, considering his rank and his branch he was a really nice bloke.

The ANDROMEDA Association has an annual reunion in Coventry and well attended. I'm sure the Association would like to hear from John or any other old shipmates from any of the Commissions. The contact email address can be found by Googling HMS ANDROMEDA. Great website so much to see and read about.

First of all, thank you for a wonderful web site. It brought back so many memories for me. I served in the Royal Navy from 1967 till 1976 and had pleasure in serving onboard the following: HMS Andromeda : 1st Commission 1969, HMS Arethusa during the COD Wars (Iceland) and finally HMS Ark Royal 1972 -1975.

I have never had pictures of the Ark, except the few of me besides the Phantom 007 on the Flight Deck!, so I now have Ark Royal as my desktop picture on my Laptop! My Son turns 21 in December and I have shown him what his Dad was up to (at his age).

I can probably tell you that the pictures of HMS Andromeda, (date unknown) are of the first commission when I was onboard in 1969. I still have some of the originals photo's (sold from the onboard NAAFI) whilst going through the Bay of Biscay (taken by the onboard Budgie). We also went to Kiel (for the beefiest!) and Singapore, Hong Kong etc. On a personal note, I emigrated to South Africa in 1975 (December) and joined the SA Navy, serving 6 years. I now live in the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg and run a WiMax Telecomms Company. Thanks again for the fond memories!

Kind Regards,
John Miller
