The Yangtze Incident, HMS Consort, HMS London and HMS Black Swan came to the aid of HMS Amethyst. HMS Consort attempted to take Amethyst in tow, however after receiving numerous hits (Admiralty records indicate up to 68 hits) from enemy shells and small arms fire she was forced to withdraw down river. Eight crewmen were killed in the action, two died later of wounds.
