I have been informed by Peter Lee-Hale, Chairman of the HMS Concord Association, that
Yangtze Veteran and contributor to this website, Derek Hodgson Crossed the Bar on 2nd
May 2020. Derek was a passionate supporter of the Concord Association and he will be
missed.

Whilst recently at my mother's I got the pleasure to look at some photos (showing below) of my grandfather. His name was John Evans and he served on HMS Concord. I'd never got to meet him as he died when my mother was only a baby herself.  If anyone knew him it would be lovely to hear from you. I've attached some of the pictures my mum has.

Thanks,
Alison Plumb

My dad served on the Concord during the Yangtze incident. He was a leading killick chef. His name was Anthony Campbell also called Tony. He was Scottish. He was also on the Consort also during the Yangtze River incident. I would love to know more about his time on board both of these ships. Hopefully someone will be able to help me.

Many thanks,
Susan Dixon

My father was August Glynn Jones. He served in WWII and had campaign medals from Atlantic, Pacific and Italy. We had a picture of HMS Concord on our dining room wall. My dad wouldn't talk about it but after he died in 1978 his mum told us that ship had rescued him. At his funeral someone spoke and said my dad had rescued a man from a burning boiler room on a ship.  We know HMS Concord was involved in the Yangtze incident, but I can not find any records of my Dads service. I wonder if you can help.

Thanks,
Michael Jones

I have recently discovered from my somewhat reticent and humble Father, whilst watching a film with him called the 'Yangtze Incident', that he said he was actually on board HMS Concord and that he went up river to escort under darkness, HMS Amethyst back to the fleet. He has never mentioned this to me before although I was aware that he was in the Royal Navy (I followed the tradition myself for a while) and that he has the UN Korea Medal and the Queens Korea Medal.

My question (at last) is has any 'campaign' medal ever been struck for the Yangtze/Amethyst incident? I'm aware that some on board the Amethyst, of course, were made awards, but wondered if the supporting players as it were, are or were entitled to any decoration. Thank you in advance for any information you are able to provide, or any guidance on where I can further pursue the question.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Rawlings

If you look through the messages you will see that there was a clasp to the NGSN awarded to men in Amethyst, London and Black Swan. But not Concord. This is a big bone of contention  among the Concord crew. It seems there are two schools of thought on this. One is that Concord exceeded her orders and went too far up river (past the forts at Woosan) to help Amethyst and since she was not ordered to do that her crew does not deserve the clasp. However there is strong evidence that she was ordered up river by the Admiralty, but this was to be a secret since this was Chinese territorial waters and the Communists had just taken over. Seems the Crown did not was to annoy the Chi-Coms by admitting they violated Chinese sovereignty. Alas, while there has been an effort for many years to get recognition for Concord's men, all attempts have been met with failure.

My late grandfather Victor Shaw served on the HMS Concord and I believe he was a gunner. He never really talked about his past and there is a lot of mystery there so just trying to see if can find anymore information.

Thanks,

My partner's dad was Thomas William McDonald, from Middlesbrough, who served on HMS Concord. We have found this board for relatives who served on HMS Concord, and I was just wondering if anyone remembers him, and could share any information or pictures of the crew from the time of the incident on the Yangtze River? We know he donated after he passed, a cap off the guns with the ship's crest covering it which was mounted to a plaque and donated to the HMS concord society.

Many thanks

I'm the daughter of Royston Charles Redman Catt who served on HMS Concord. I'm wondering if you could put my message on the message board just to ask if there are any updates on any Medals that may be awarded for the men who served on HMS Concord. I see that last update is 2016.

Thank you,
Christine Giles

I was very pleased to read the article sent in by Willie, it certainly is an in-depth description of the Yangtze Incident.  I would just like to add the following information as it points to the disgraceful behaviour of certain gentlemen who are supposed to govern us.

The mentioned enquiry conducted by Sir John Holmes and Brigadier Parritt together with the argument put forward by the then minister Mark Francois at the debate held in Westminster Hall choose to mislead by insisting that the period for qualification for the Yangtze Clasp was the 20/21 April 1949 when it can be confirmed by the Ministry of Defence own Medal Department and the White Paper put forward by the Prime Minister Clement Atlee that the qualifying period in the case of HMS Amethyst was to have served one day during the period 20th April to the 31st July 1949.  They mischievously choose to ignore this fact as it destroys their findings contained within their so-called Review. Just how can anyone accept the comments made by them when they choose to adhere to an absolute lie in order to support their so called comprehensive enquiry.

HMS Concord was in the Yangtze river from the 28th to the 31st July 1949 during which time the two White Ensigns were continually flown from the Yard Arms demonstrating that the ship was at battle stations.

Regards,
Derek Hodgson
