I am looking for information about my Grandfather who served on H.M.S. Terrible at the turn of the century (1900's) He was a Stoker/ Petty officer and I think that his records of service have gone to our archive here in Jersey.

I am just coming up to 70 years of age and unfortunately never met my grand father as he had died before I was born. I am just moving house and came across his medal for long service on HMS Terrible along with his service No. together with my Fathers service record in The Royal Hampshire Reg. along with his medals and Oak Leaf from the Burma Campaign and also with my sole medal GSM Aden Clasp circa 1967.

It would be nice to have any account that you might have for my Grandfather whilst on Terrible.

Yours Expectantly,
Roger Liot

I have been searching for information about the ships my Grandfather served on. He was Percival Mills born in Portsmouth and lived at Upper Beeding near Brighton. His Naval record papers list the following ships:
Northampton from 1898
Caliope
Victory
Vernon
Duke of Wellington
Andromeda
Cruiser
Ocean
Excellent
Fire Quen
Terrible
Good Hope
Hector (J.B.14) - I don't understand the JB14 reference
Blenheim Renard
Pembroke
President (N Irish)
Victory (Portsmouth area) to May 1921

He transferred quite frequently (months in some cases) and revisited some ships. He began as a Boy in September 1898, became a Leading Boatman and reached the rank of Petty Officer by 1921. I think he travelled abroad as I have a photo of him in what looks like a tropical outfit. He was finally in the Plymouth area 1921-1923 and was discharged with compensation on reduction of Coast Guard (GM36A/1923) in 1923.after receiving Good Conduct Badges 1903, 1907 and 1912 I believe he was a coast guard at Prawle Point and was also in N Ireland living at Buncrana, presumably as a Coast Guard. I am interested in gathering information about the ships he served on. I hope some of this information may be some interest to you. Thank you for your brilliant website.

Kind regards,
David Mills
