4. Nov. 27, 2020 The last photo in the John Failis Collection you have posted has my grandfather in it. Irishmen named William Shaw Orr. I remember him saying he wore a different uniform, but I do not remember why? He is the only person in a different uniform. Thank you, Nigel Eynon, Townsville, Australia |
Would anybody be able to help me? I am trying to find out about my Uncle, William (Billy or monty) Alford. He was with the NAAFI and died in Singapore in 1950. Thanks. |
Reply 1 I was serving on the Unicorn as a boy seaman c 1949-51. My memory suggests that William Alford could have been the subject of an assault in a Singapore village, I think was Nee Soon. This resulted in his death. What prompts my memory was that I was cleaning the ship's name and peered into the sick bay via a port hole and saw a person laid out (covered). The story was that he had gone ashore into the village and was stabbed. Possibly contact the Singapore Police records. |
My wife has recently discovered among her late mothers documents letters written in about 1945 from a J.A.S. Currie D/JX 246422 (L/TEL??) who was active on HMS Unicorn at this time. It seems that the ship at some point had docked in Durban, South Africa and during this time Jimmy (as signed in his letters) took a trip up to Pietermaritzburg where he met my wife's mother Magdelina (Max) Halgreen. In his letters he writes very affectionately about her and wrote many poems in his letters. He was obviously very eloquent and his poems most enlightening. It is possible that he may still be living or that his relatives may be interested in some of his poems. This is a shot in the dark so to speak and look forward to hearing from you. |
Have just found my late fathers ship on your wonderful web site. James Jamieson served on her from 1943-1945. Well done keep up the good work. |
