Sunk by torpedo July 11, 1942 by U-582 (Kapitänleutnant Werner Schulte). Location: North Atlantic, 400 miles west southwest of the Madeira Islands. (31.15N - 23.50W) Eighty-seven crew and passengers killed. Three survivors picked up by HMS Rother K-224 on July 12. (Note, most published reports indicate that there were 88 casualties, but the original passenger manifest indicates that one passenger, William R. Lawn, may not have sailed.) |
