Apr. 14, 2011 A bit of interesting background - the steam locos (shown in the photo gallery) were built in Sydney originally as an aid gift of some sort for China, but when the Communists took over the gift was cancelled and 10 x 5' 3" gauge locos went to the South Australian Railways and the Commonwealth Railways got 10 x standard gauge 4' 8 ½ ", two of which arrived on the Belbetty as you have seen. There were eight others, most of which were scrapped in the early 1960's without turning a wheel. This was due to the first EMD diesels arriving at the same time. Geoff Hall |
