Note the report at top left: "Two Jap. Submarines Sunk Off East Coast"
(No Japanese submarines were damaged or sunk off the Australian coast.)
Also note the report in column 2: "Diego Suarez Raided By Japanese Subs"
(The Admiralty denied the Japanese claim that a Queen Elizabeth class battleship and a cruiser had been damaged in the attack against Diego Suarez. No cruiser had been hit, but the Queen Elizabeth class battleship HMS Ramillies had been badly damaged by a midget submarine launched by I-20. It was true that there were no casualties on the ship.

This attack, the Japanese midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbor and the attack against the Aleutian Islands were a feint by the Japanese to distract the Americans before the planned attack on Midway Atoll on June 4th. The distraction failed because U.S. codebreakers, under the command of Commander Joe Rochefort, had broken the Japanese code and knew of the planned attack against Midway. The Battle of Midway was one of the most significant turning points of the Pacific war and Rochefort should have been decorated for his accomplishment, but because he got sideways with several higher-ups in the intelligence community in Washington, D.C., the petty nature of such small men denied him what he had earned and even had him removed from his duties at Pearl Harbor, putting the country and the lives of U.S. military personnel at risk.)

Note the headline report: "Second Ship Torpedoed Off N.S.W. Coast; 38 Men Missing"
(The unidentified ship was the 3,353-ton freighter Iron Crown, which was sunk by the Japanese submarine I-27. Thirty-seven men were lost in the ship. The report claims the boat was attacked and sunk by Allied aircraft, which was not true. I-27 survived until Feb. of 1944.)

Note the report at top left: "At Least 8 Jap Ships Damaged In Midway Invasion Attempt; New Attack Pressed by U.S."
(The Battle of Midway was concluding on this day, but the American commanders did not know the extent of the Japanese defeat. Reports of damaged battleships were incorrect, but four aircraft carriers and a cruiser were sunk. On the U.S. side, one aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown CV-5 and a destroyer USS Hammann DD-412 were sunk. The significance of the Battle of Midway was not realized for several days.)
