Note the report in column 4: "We Sink Four More Ships" |
(The unnamed submarine is HMS Turbulent, which did, under the command of Commander John. W. Linton, DSC, sink a number of ships. I cannot tell exactly which ones he may be referring to in his report. HMS Turbulent sailed from Algiers on Feb. 23, 1943 and failed to return. Linton was Posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.) |
Also note the report in column 4: "Destroyer and Trawler Lost" |
(The destroyer, HMS Southwold, was sunk by a mine on Mar. 24, five men were lost with the ship. HM Trawler Stella Capella was sunk by U-701 on Mar. 11, 1942. All thirty-three men on board were lost.) |

Note the report at top left: "U.S. Destroyer Sunk Off Florida" |
(USS Stuartevant DD-240 was sunk on Apr. 26 by a U.S. mine, which had been laid on the 25th. The commanding officer had not been informed of the minefield. The lack of communication cost the lives of 17 men on the ship. A further three ships were also sunk on this minefield. On June 15 the 1,942-ton Norwegian freighter Gunvor was sunk with the loss of two men. On June 19 the 2,966-ton Yugoslavian freighter Bosilijka was sunk, this was the only ship which did not suffer any loss of life. Finally, on July 2 the 8,151-ton U.S. freighter Edward Luckenback went down with one man.) |
