Note the report in column 6: "Japanese Submarine Rammed Two Lifeboats"
(The report that a Japanese submarine (I-156) rammed two of the lifeboats may or may not be true. Other reports claim that the submarine had machine-gunned one of the lifeboats before ramming it. I have no authoritative account that indicates that the submarine commander, Lt. Commander Katsuo Ohashi, committed a war crime against the survivors of the Kwangtung. However, it is known that several Japanese submarine commanders did commit such crimes. What is known is that ninety-six members of the crew perished in the sinking. There were thirty-five survivors.)
