Note the report in columns 2-4: "Allied Planes Smash 8 Invasion Ships"
(At best three Japanese merchant ships were sunk by U.S. Navy aircraft, another was sunk by a mine, however, a Japanese post-war assessment lists only two as being sunk.)
Also note the report at top right: "Tirpitz, Attacked With Torpedoes By Planes, Fled In Smoke Screen"
(The report was true, Tirpitz was attacked by torpedo aircraft, but no hits were obtained. Two of the aircraft, Fairey Albacores from HMS Victorious, failed to return.)

(The unnamed ships were; the 7,011-ton British tanker Melpomene and the 6,515-ton Swedish tanker Skane. Both were sunk by the Italian submarine Giuseppe Finzi.)
Also note the report in column 3: "Navy Lists Freighter As Lost in Pacific"
(The freighter Malama was sunk on Jan. 1, 1942 by a floatplane from the Japanese Armed Merchant Cruiser Aikoku Maru. All 38 men survived and were taken prisoner. Two died in Japanese custody.)
