(The lie has now made it the rest of the way around the world. This report gives a very detailed account of what the aircraft were doing. It seems that the invisible aircraft, flew at speeds from 200 mph at altitudes ranging from 900 to 18,000 feet. The false alarm, or more to the point, the explanation given by Secretary of War Henry Stimson, caused such a panic that officials in Loa Angeles wanted the Army to search for "secret enemy air bases" which they believed could be located in lower California, Arizona, Nevada or New Mexico.) |
