October 25, 1941: Front page of the News and Chronicle, London, England.

Note the report in columns 3-5: "Petain Offered Himself As Hostage To Nazis"
(Marshal Petain, trying to spare some of his countrymen from death, offers himself to the Nazis as a hostage until the killers of the German officers are surrendered.)
Also note the report in column 4: "Italian Armed Liner Torpedoed"
(The Citta di Genova may well have been fired on, but it was not sunk. It survived until Jan. 21, 1943 when the British submarine HMS Tigris sank it off Otranto, Italy. At lease 173 people were lost in the ship.)
Also note the report in column 4: "Destroyer Lost After Sinking U-Boat"
(HMS Broadwater was sunk while escorting convoy SC-48 on Oct. 18th, but the attacking U-Boat, U-101 was not sunk.)
