Note the report at top right: "U-Boats Sink 10 British Ships In Atlantic, Germans Claim"
(This time the claims by the Germans were not just bluster. The claim was that U-Boats had sunk 10 merchant ships and 2 destroyers. The attack was against convoy SC-48, which took place between Oct. 15-18. In the attack, nine merchant ships and two destroyers were sunk, although, the second destroyer was not sunk until the 18th, which makes it unlikely that this ship, HMS Broadwater, was included in the total given by the Germans on this date. The second destroyer mentioned as sunk, was only damaged. This was USS Kearny DD-432, which the writer correctly speculates about in the report. The Germans did get the overall tonnage wrong, they claimed 60,000 had been lost, in fact they overestimated by 12,000 tons, which was not a bad guess on their part. Note at the very end of the report this appears; z zz z, as if the writer believes the report is a lie. Of course, since he was in the press, he must have been well aware of how many false, fake, inaccurate and just made-up reports are in the paper every day, so I suppose I can understand his cynicism.)

October 18, 1941: Front page of The Evening Star, Washington, D.C.

Note the report in columns 5-6: "Asst. Attorney General Clark Shot Hunting in Connecticut"
(Samuel O. Clark, Jr. Asst. Attorney General, was accidentally shot in the side of the face and shoulder while hunting. According to the report, he stumbled and shot himself. There is no truth to the rumor that former Vice-President Dick Cheney was on this hunting trip, as a matter of fact, Cheney was only nine months old at the time.)
