(The report assumes the survivors were from the Kota Nopan, which the Allies believed had been sunk by a German raider. In fact, Kota Nopan had been captured by the German Hilfskreuzer [auxiliary cruiser] Komet on Aug. 17, 1941, all of the 51 people on board had been taken prisoner. The Stanvac Manila had rescued the survivors from the 5,719-ton Marken, which was sunk by U-111 on Sept. 10. Stanvac Manila also became a war loss, on May 23, 1943 when it was sunk by the Japanese submarine I-17.)

(Capt. Charles E. Rosendahl made an il-advised prediction that dirigibles [Zeppelins] twice the size of the Hindenburg, would patrol the seas with a range of 10,000 miles carrying 12 aircraft. He was inspecting a site for Navy blimps, which were deployed against the U-boat threat, but Zeppelins large enough to carry 12 aircraft, never happened.)
