Day 739

September 8, 1941: Front page of the News and Chronicle, London, England.

Note the report at top right: "President Roosevelt's Mother Dies - World Speech Postponed"
(President Roosevelt was scheduled to give a speech about the USS Greer incident today, but the death of his mother delayed it until Sept. 11th.)
Also note the report in columns 1-2: "German Submarine is Captured By Red Fleet in Arctic"
(Moscow claims that their forces captured U-73, but as usual with the Russians, this was a lie. I can find no record of any U-boat captured by the Soviets in the month of August up to Sept. 10, 1941. U-73 was sunk in the Mediterranean Sea on Dec. 16, 1943.)

September 8, 1941: Front page of The Daily Mail, Hull, England.

Note the report in columns 6-7: "U-Boat's Surrender After Air Attack"
( U-570, on its first war patrol, was forced to the surface and surrendered. It was towed into port and commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Graph. Used by the RN for testing, it was wrecked Mar. 20, 1944 and abandoned.)
Also note the report in column 8: "German Air Raid Deaths - Total 3,852 Up To August 2"
(Of course, the real numbers were much higher.)

Note the report in column 3: "Hannover Jews Lose HOmes in Book Reprisal"
(The Nazis gave the Jews 24 hours to leave, and allowed them to take very little. They were told the remainder of their property would be sold and they would be given the money "at a given time." (Which would never come of course.) The Nazis used a book written by a Jew in New York that was critical of the Germans, as the excuse for this action, but it was only an excuse, the Germans would have done this no matter what.)

September 8, 1941: Front page of The Evening Gazette, Xenia, Ohio.
(Click on the image for a readable version.)

Note the report in column 5: "Nazis In Paris Hold 100 Jews For Hostages"
(These people were arrested because of acts of terrorism against the Nazis, so the Nazis claim. Of course, they could have been arrested because it was Sunday, or because it was raining, maybe because they were breathing.)
