Note the report at top left: "U-Boat Fired at Greer in Defense Against Attack, Germans Declare; Battle Lasted Till Near Midnight"
(The German statement matches exactly what the U-boat commander wrote in his war diary.)
Also note the report in column 3: "Four Americans Lost, Two Hurt When Sub Torpedoed Ship"
(The unnamed ship was the Fort Richepanse, which had been attacked and damaged by German aircraft and later in the day was sunk by U-567. The Americans were recruits heading to England to join the Royal Air Force. The four men were; William M. Bishop, John R. Cox, Harry H. Hay and Frank J. Kruszynski.)
Also note the political cartoon at top right: "Scooped--by the Ghost Reporter"
Also note the report in column 6: "Asks Liberty or Death, Dies"
(As the late, great Paul Harvey would say "here is a strange." A stranger strolled into the midst of a political argument on the Adair County Courthouse lawn, shouted, "Give me liberty or death"-and dropped dead.)
