(The headline created by the unidentified "naval officer" was correct, but it would not last. In the month of July, total British (only) losses by all causes were 94,310. In August the number was 96,310 tons. That was down from 268,000 tons in June and from 386,953 tons in May, which was the worst month of the year. However, in September, losses increased to 214,664 tons. In October, British losses were 151,777 tons, November losses were 90,711 [the lowest losses of the year] and in December the number exploded to 270,873 tons.
