(Adolf Hitler awards three U-boat commanders the Eichenlaub (Oak Leaves) to their Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross.) Kapitänleutnant Herbert Schultze of U-48, Korvettenkapitän Heinrich Liebe of U-38 and Kapitänleutnant Engelbert Endrass of U-46. Endrass was the only one of the three to die in the war. He was lost with U-567 in Dec. of 1941.)

(The ship is identified as the Dutch Maarsden, but was in fact, the Maasdam, which was sunk by U-564. There were two casualties, both were American Red Cross nurses, Ruth W. Breckenridge and Maxine C. Loomis. All the survivors were later picked up by Norwegian ships.)
