Note the bottom photo at top left of Befehlschaber der Unterseeboote [commander-in-chief U-boats] Vizeadmiral Karl Dönitz, awarding the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuz [Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross] to Kapitänleutnant Georg-Wilhelm Schulz, commanding officer of U-124. Schulz sank 19 ships for over 89,000 tons between Aug. 25, 1940 and Apr. 13, 1941. He survived the war and died in 1986.
Note the photo at right of SS-Sturmbannführer Kurt Meyer who was awarded the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuz. He would get the nickname "Panzer Meyer" and would later receive the Eichenlaub [oak leaves] and Schwerter [swords] for his Ritterkreuz. Meyer survived the war and died in 1961.
