(Over the past few days the theory has been put forward that the German troop build-up along the Russian border is nothing but Hitler trying to blackmail Stalin into giving Germany oil and other materials. [See report in The Examiner below.] As we now know, this was not a bargaining chip being used by Hitler, but it was Hitler's goal to invade the Soviet Union since long before Sept. 1, 1939.)

(No battleship was hit, but the cruiser Lützow [ex-Deutschland] was. Lützow had just come out of the Deutsche Werke at Kiel following repairs to the ship from damage suffered during the invasion of Norway in Apr. 1940, including being torpedoed by the British submarine HMS Spearfish. Only 12 days after being recommissioned, Lützow was hit by one torpedo from the attacking aircraft. The damage was enough to put the ship out of service until May of 1942.)

(Robin Moor was sunk by U-69 and it was the first U.S. merchant ship sunk by direct enemy action in World War II. The first U.S. owned ship sunk in World War II was the City of Rayville, which was sunk by a mine laid by the German auxiliary minelayer Passat on Nov. 9, 1940. The first U.S. owned merchant ship sunk by direct enemy action was the Charles Pratt, sunk by U-65 on Dec. 21, 1940, but it had been transferred to Panama and was flying the Panamanian flag when lost.)
