(The report was false. Liguria had been damaged by Allied aircraft in July of 1940 and was scuttled on Jan. 22, 1941 off Tobruk, Libya. Lombardia had a similar fate. Damaged by Allied aircraft in mid-1943, she was scuttled in Sept. 1943. Both ships were later scrapped.)
