Note the report in column 3: "Feared Lost At Sea - Lieut.-Commander G. H. Nowell"
(The report was sadly true. His submarine, HMS Phoenix, was last heard from on July 14, 1940. The most likely cause of the loss was an attack by the Italian torpedo boat Albatros, but this has not been positively confirmed because the wreck has not been located.)

December 16, 1940: Front page of the Birmingham Gazette, Birmingham, England.

Note the report in column 1: "U-Boat Tried to Interfere - Sunk"
(True, the Italian submarine Naiade had been attacked and damaged by HM destroyers Hyperion and Hereward, the boat surfaced and scuttled.)
Also note the report in column 1: "British Cruiser Sunk"
(The Italians claim their submarine, Neghelli, sunk a cruiser of the Southampton class off Egypt. The report was false.)

Note the report in column 8: "Submarine Hits Two Nazi Ships"
(The report also states that a second ship was damaged. The report was mostly true. Sunfish had sunk the Finish cargo ship Oscar Midling and damaged the Norwegian tanker Dixie. The tonnage was incorrect as the submarine commander claimed almost twice the actual tonnage. Oscar Midling was only 2,182 GRT and Dixie was only 1,715 GRT.)
