Daily Event for August 24, 2016

Built at Neptune Werke in Rostock, Germany and commissioned on Dec. 30, 1943, U-925 was one of over 550 Type VIIC U-boats commissioned by the Kriegsmarine in World War II. The boat was placed under the command of Oberleutnant zur See (der Reserve) Helmuth Knoke, U-925 was his first command. The boat was sent to Stettin and joined the 4th U-boat Flotilla for training in the Baltic Sea. On July 31 the training period was completed and they sailed to Kiel for supplies and orders.

On Aug. 15th Knoke took U-925 out of Kiel and made his way to Norway arriving in Horten on the following day. Five days later they left Horten for Kristiansand. U-925 was to make a sortie into the North Atlantic via the Iceland-Faroes passage to be used as a weather reporting boat. This was necessary and important work, however this was not a duty enjoyed by U-boat men.

U-925 and the fifty-one man crew departed Kristiansand, Norway on August 24, 1944 and headed into for the North Sea. After leaving port the boat and the men were never seen or heard from again. According to the BdU KTB, U-925 failed to make a passage report, required by every U-boat to let U-boat command know they made it into open water, and made no subsequent reports of any kind.

Commander U-boats, Konteradmiral Eberhard Gote, and his staff made no notations in the KTB about U-925 for over a month. Perhaps they were more concerned about the many losses suffered by other boats during the month of September. It was not until Oct. 2nd that an entry was made stating that U-925 must be considered to be lost and that there was no information as to the cause. To the best of my knowledge the wreck has not been found to this day and there has been no evidence that the boat was lost due to an enemy action. Since no passage report was made we can only assume that the boat is sitting on the bottom of the North Sea waiting to be discovered.
