Daily Event for September 19, 2012

The largest ship in the Bulgarian merchant fleet, SS Rodina, was 377' long and 4,159 gross tons. Originally built for Norddeutscher Lloyd of Bremen as Eisenach by Vulcan Werft in Stettin. In 1935 she was sold to Société Commerciale Bulgare de Navigation À Vapeur of Varna, Bulgaria and renamed Rodina. On September 19, 1941 the ship hit a mine in the Black Sea 25 miles from Burghaz, Bulgaria and sank. I have no details about casualties or survivors. It is also unclear if she was sunk by a mine laid by the Russian submarines L-4 and L-5 or a Bulgarian mine, which had been laid in defense of their waters.
