April 7, 1910 at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany a battlecruiser was launched. As was the tradition with the German navy the ship's name was not revealed until she was christened, but it was correctly speculated that the new ship would be named Moltke. Generaloberst Helmuth von Moltke, nephew of Field Marshal Helmuth Graf von Moltke, named the ship and made a rather long and rambling speech during the ceremony. After taking part in almost every major German fleet action in the Great War, Moltke was surrendered at Scapa Flow, scuttled and scrapped. |
