Built by Alexander Denny in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1856 the 356 ton, 146' long passenger/cargo ship Victor Emmaunel was owned by
John Mitchell of Glasgow. In 1859 she was sold to Danish owners and renamed Arcturus. She remained under that name until April 5, 1877 when she was sunk in a collision with the British steamer Savona in the Baltic Sea. Arcturus was en route from Copenhagen to Danzig in ballast when the collision occurred off Falsterbo, Sweden. The ship was lost, but the crew were removed by Savona and landed at Copenhagen with no loss of life. |
