Daily Event for January 23, 2012

January 23, 1905 Vickers in Barrow launched the submarine A-8. The A class boats were built on the Holland design and had limited value as true weapons, but the experience learned from them was quite valuable. Thirteen were built in the class, seven of them sank due to various causes, none of them combat related.

HMS A-8 was one of the seven to sink. She was commissioned on May 8, 1905 and on June 8, 1905 she sank in Plymouth Sound due to a loose rivet in the bow. Fifteen of her crew were lost. She was raised and put back in service and was scrapped in 1920.
