Daily Event for July 21, 2011

July 21, 1943 USS Haddock SS-231, under the command of Lt. Commander (later Rear Admiral) Roy M. Davenport, located a Japanese convoy of four transports in the Philippine Sea some 873 miles ENE of Manila. In a daylight attack Davenport sailed under the escorting destroyers and fired a spread of eight torpedoes. Several hits were reported, but only one ship was actually sunk. The victim was the SS Saipan Maru, built in 1936 at Mitsubishi she was a 5,532 ton passenger/cargo ship which was carrying troops and 180 Geishas. I have no details on casualties or survivors, but one source suggests that most of those on board were rescued. It was daring attacks like this which earned Davenport the Navy Cross a record five times during his career.
