Daily Event for July 18, 2011

July 18, 1942 the Maizuru Navy Yard launched the destroyer Shimakaze. She was the first of seventeen planned in her class, but none of the others were ever built. She was 415' long and carried fifteen 24" torpedo tubes, all of which had a reload, and she could make 40 knots when forced. Shimakaze survived until Nov. 11, 1944 when she was bombed and sunk by U.S. Navy aircraft from TF-38 in Ormoc Bay, Philippines.
