January 17, 1885 the Aquidaban, a Brazilian turret ship, was launched at Samuda Brothers in London. The ship was christened by Madame Carvalhoh with the religious service preformed by the Bishop of Emmaus. Among the noted attendees was Sir Thomas Brassey, M.P., creator of Brassey's Naval Annual and many other naval publications. The launch went without problems after which the ship was towed to Millwall dock for fitting out. She had a rather colorful career including being sunk once. She was finally destroyed by a magazine explosion on Jan. 21, 1906 |
